Work and Play

Block Number: 29

On April 15, 2010 “Work and Play” (block #29) was placed on the home of Susie Sweet and Gwen Straub in Nebo. Look closely and you will see paintbrushes and golf tees, which is the story they wish to tell: their love of art and the game of golf. Susie and Gwen designed this block to reflect how their work and play meet. In the center of the block, they placed the yen and yang symbol, which represents the energy in the universe. The symbol is also the first letter in their last names. Being artists, Susie reported looking through thousands of quilt patterns, “But we were unable to find anything that reflected what we do and what we have to say.”

Susie is a retired owner of a barber styling shop at the University of Central Florida. She is also an entrepreneur, a recreational pilot, a fisherman, an artist, and loves playing golf. Gwen was very much involved in the environmental arena in Volusia County, Florida, having served as President of the Volusia/Flagler Environmental Council, “trying to save what is left of the natural, the real Florida, not the shopping centers and cookie cuter residential developments."
