FABRIC SHOP HOSTS QUILT BLOCK “ADDIE’S SUN, MOON & STARS”

On May 17, 2917 Gail Ramsey hosted McDowell Quilt Trail Block #226 entitled “Addie’s Sun, Moon & Stars”. The block was installed by volunteers Mike Lucas, Jack Raker and Alan Scholl on the Stitch & Save Fabric Shop located on Highway 70 West, Marion, North Carolina.

Gail owns the Shop and opened it in 2015, operating in Marion approximately two years now. Her mother, Maxa Mayhew had opened shop in Madison County by the French Broad River back in 1963 and was a fine quilter. The current Shop has an array of fabrics, not just for quilting but any other project, with easy to find materials in color coded rooms.

The 46” X 46” block is in recognition and memory of Gail’s grandmother, Addie Whorley who quilted even during her bedside declining years until age 92. She sewed up to one quilt a week, and every single one of them had the same pattern of sun, moon and stars somewhere on it.

There are many variations of this pattern and this block centers the sun, moon and stars surrounded by a series of concentric borders in brilliant colors. It is a great highlight to the Stitch & Save Fabric Shop’s front window. The Certificate of Authenticity for Block #226 was presented to Gail by Chairwoman Jill Lucas.
